Pickups from Lagos and Praia da Luz

Most surf schools teach on one beach and hope it works. We do the opposite. Every morning we look at the swell, wind and tide, decide whether the south coast near Lagos or the west coast towards Sagres and Aljezur is the better bet, and drive the group there. Over 17 years of doing this in Lagos we have learned that the beach matters more than anything else in a lesson: the right size wave in the right wind turns a frustrating morning into the day you first stand up.

A surf day runs from pickup in Lagos to drop-off in Lagos and is built around two sessions in the water with a lunch break in between. Groups are capped at eight surfers per instructor, which is small enough that you get pushed into waves, corrected, and told what to do differently on the next one. Beginners spend the first session on foam boards in whitewater learning to pop up. Intermediates work on paddling into unbroken waves, trimming along the face and reading where the wave will break. If you already surf, the instructor will spend the day on the specific thing holding you back rather than repeating a generic lesson.

You do not need to bring anything except swimwear, a towel, sun cream and water. Boards and wetsuits come in the van in a full range of sizes, and we change them during the day if you are ready for something smaller or if the conditions call for something with more volume. Sports insurance is included in the price, and the instructors are qualified [CONFIRM: certification body].

Where we surf

South coast: Meia Praia and Porto de Mós are the calm end of the range, sheltered and forgiving, and they are usually where a first lesson happens. [CONFIRM: full list of south coast beaches used]

West coast: Arrifana and Amado face the open Atlantic and pick up swell when the south goes flat. The drive is longer, the water is a bit cooler and the waves have more shape. [CONFIRM: full list of west coast beaches used]

We decide on the morning of your lesson, not in advance. If you have a preference, tell the instructor in the van and we will explain what the forecast is doing.

What people say

Questions

I have never surfed. Is a full day too much?

No. The day is split into two shorter sessions with lunch and a rest in between, so you are not paddling for six hours straight. Most first-timers stand up in the first session.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in the sea and able to swim without a board. You will be in shallow water for a beginner lesson, but waves move you around and comfort in the water matters.

What if the sea is flat?

That is the reason we drive. If the south coast is flat we head west, and the west coast very rarely has nothing at all. If conditions are genuinely unsafe everywhere we will tell you and move your day.

Where does the van pick up in Lagos?

[CONFIRM: exact Lagos pickup points and times]. Tell us where you are staying when you book and we will confirm the nearest stop.

Can I book for tomorrow?

Often yes, but the van has a fixed number of seats. Message us on WhatsApp and you will get an answer the same day.

What is the water temperature?

Roughly 16°C in winter and 20°C in late summer on the south coast, and a degree or two cooler on the west. You get a wetsuit either way.
