How a surf day works

  1. Yellow surf van parked beside the beach1

    Pickup

We collect you from your pickup point in the van. Pickup times: [CONFIRM: pickup times].

  2. Open ocean swell beneath a pale sky2

    Swell check

We've already looked at the forecast at dawn and picked the coast that's working. You'll hear why on the drive.

  3. Gentle waves on a beach at sunset3

    Drive to the beach

South coast if it's small and clean, west coast if the Atlantic is delivering. Usually 20 to 75 minutes.

  4. Surfer carrying a board towards the water on a sunlit beach4

    The lesson

Warm-up and safety briefing on the sand, then coaching in the water in groups of no more than eight per instructor.

  5. Surfboard resting beside palm trees near the beach5

    Lunch

Lunch pack on the beach, a rest, and then back in for a second surf if you've got the arms for it.

  6. Surfer carving across a breaking ocean wave6

    Drive back

Boards rinsed, wetsuits off, and we drop you back where we picked you up.

Where we surf

The Algarve has two coasts within an hour of Lagos and they behave completely differently. The south coast, with Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, is sheltered and forgiving, and it is where most first lessons happen.

The west coast faces the open Atlantic. Arrifana, Amado and the beaches around Sagres and Aljezur pick up swell when the south is flat, and the waves have more shape and more push.

What people say

Pickup areas

Lagos is our home base and Praia da Luz is on the daily route. There is no surcharge for either.

Questions

Do I need to have surfed before?

No. Most people in the van on any given morning have never stood on a board. Beginners start in whitewater on soft-tops and usually get to their feet in the first session.

Which beach will we surf?

We decide on the morning. If the south coast near Lagos is clean we stay close; if the Atlantic is working we drive west towards Arrifana, Amado and Sagres.

What is included in the price?

Van transport, surfboard, wetsuit, the lesson, sports insurance and a lunch pack. Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream and water.

How big are the groups?

A maximum of eight surfers per instructor. Private lessons are capped at two.

Can children come?

Yes. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult in the group, and we choose gentler beaches on family days.
